Samples and sample packs is a huge business with a lot of great sound designers involved. Our round-up of the best free Hip Hop samples
A sample pack is a digital collection of musical sounds that are intended to be arranged in a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) for making music. These sounds could typically include drum hits, piano chords, synth lines, whole drum beats or breakbeats, vocal sounds and much more. In this case, we’ve restricted our focus to only sample packs in the Hip Hop genre.
Almost always, sample packs are sold to make music royalty-free. This means that, as long as you’re using them for commercial music (an original track that you’re releasing), you won’t need to pay anything for using them – you just need to pay the upfront cost to purchase the pack – although in this case, for most of these packs that price is nothing! Please ensure you check that your sample packs – free or otherwise – are indeed royalty-free, as Loopmasters can’t guarantee or be responsible for the content of other websites.

Loads of free samples but they’re not just for Hip Hop.
This pack is an absolute mammoth of free samples, weighing in at a whole gigabyte. You’ll find hits and loops of drums, synths, bass and more, alongside some ‘real’ recording instrument content, and even vocals – which is pretty impressive for a sample pack. Not content to stop there, Black Octopus have even thrown in 30 Serum presets for anyone using Xfer’s synth.
Given the number of genres on display within this pack, you should consider whether you’ll find everything useful or will need to go through removing a few that aren’t relevant to you. If you like his hard driven 808 sounds, this is the pack for you.
According to Bvker, Pierre Bourne is responsible for the distorted 808 sounds heard in tracks like 6ix9ine’s Gummo, Travis Scott’s Watch, and Playboi Carti’s Magnolia. This pack has been specifically made to match Bourne’s style and therefore the style of all those tracks. It’s a specific sound, but if it’s the sound you’re into, you’ll be happy to know that you can get a bunch of the sounds you need for free!

Just 24 samples here, doesn’t that seem low? Well ‘low’ is the name of the game when it comes to sub bass! These samples have been made to beef up the bottomest of bottom ends, keeping your mix aloft on their shoulder like the Atlas in Greek mythology.

Unison Audio’s Famous drum packs give you drum sounds from famous songs, recreated to what Unison say is “99.9% accuracy.” We can’t vouch for the number, but we like the idea – and this free pack will allow you to put those claims to the test for five songs.
It’s certainly a good idea to play around with these drum sounds. Even if you’re not using them directly as the drums for your own tracks, you can also use them to get a sense of how professional drums sound, or to layer with flavours of your own – perhaps from the drums you get from other packs in this article!

Available for nothing with a Loopcloud free trial but with a normal value of £15, this pack from Raw Cutz is a great way to show the world that you know how Hip Hop “should” sound.
A sample pack with some attitude, Dark Hip Hop is a more musical, organic set of samples intended for producers who like their beats, y’know… real. This pack isn’t in the realm of ‘Ultimate Collection’, but more like “Definite Collector’s Edition’ – there are a variety of sounds across a tasteful mix of instruments.

One of the 808-est free packs you can get your fingers on
Bvker’s ‘Drip Kit’ is one in the style of Metro Boomin, aka Young Metro or Metro Beatz, who according to Kver.com has worked with producers “including Travis Scott, Future, Young Thug, Drake, Gucci Mane or Kanye West”. This pack gives you 100 samples in the young producer’s style to use in your own projects.

The samples have been more treated, giving them more atmosphere, and so while there are fewer samples to choose from, all have had more attention and quality poured into them.
