Introducing Roots of Afro Funk from Loopmasters, an exceptional collection inspired by the music of early Nigerian afrobeat and artists including Fela Kuti, Ojah, Tony Allen, Ebo Taylor Jnr, Manu Dibango, and Mulatu Astatka. Featuring five distinct songs, this sample pack offers a diverse array of loops, providing an immersive exploration of the genre.
Afrobeat or Afrofunk combined West African musical styles with American funk and jazz. The percussion was usually very prominent in the mix. Afrobeat evolved mainly in Nigeria in the late 60's, pioneered by Fela Kuti and Tony Allen who took African rhythms and translated them to modern drum kit techniques.
Early recordings were pretty homemade and equipment was not readily available but this ended up giving the genre a unique identity. The genre was all about having a good time and live renditions of songs would hypnotically play for 10-30 mins
The recording of the samples in Roots of Afro Funk was done in quite a basic manner to re-capture the essence of basement recordings. Old but iconic gear was used such as ribbon microphones as well as vintage keyboards, drum kits, and reverbs. A selection of mixed percussion including congas, shekere, caxixi, cabasas, and wood blocks was used as percussion is pivotal to Afrofunk music.
On the melodic front, a rich assortment of guitars including jazz bass and Fender Stratocaster guitar stand ready for instant use. Complementing these are the distinctive sounds of Philicorda organs, Hohner planets, Roland Sh-101, and the vibrant tones of baritone and alto saxophones.
